Donut Day

Donuts in the Case

Once every 3 years or so, my family has this ridiculously excessive tradition. We wake up early on a Saturday and have a donut tasting.

And it is exactly as awesome as it sounds.

However, this is an amazingly un-local thing. The local-est place that we go is Lamar’s, but we also tried Krispy Kreme and Dunkin’ Donuts this year. After my devotion

Then, there’s this.

Meesha is organizing a meetup at John’s Space Age Donuts in downtown Overland Park on May 19, the same day that the new Dunkin’ Donuts opens up just down the street. I’ve got some friends who freaked out when Dunkin’ Donuts came to town. After my donut day, I can categorically say that Dunkin’ Donuts is very MEH and they certainly can’t hold a candle to Lamar’s. I’m going to try and make it to John’s on May 19 and give them a try.

It seems like they’re the awesomest. What are your KC suggestions for my family’s next excessive donut day?

  1. Meesha is always trying to lead someone down the primrose path of excess. I can forgive him, though; he taught me how to make borsch. It’s good, and it’s healthy.
    Enjoy your donuts.

  2. To be honest I am little tired of donuts, someone tries to bring them to work every Saturday.Last time I brought muffins and someone else brought bagels and I enjoyed both for a change. But the thing on the 19th is to counteract all the free publicity Dunkin Donuts are getting being an (old) new place in town. I had them in NYC and they are just donuts, nothing special. So it’s not about eating but more like supporting the old business which will probably be hurt by another donut shop just few blocks away.

  3. We had Poppy’s recently. They are delish! My old favorite was Winchell’s but they aren’t around here any longer. Poppy’s may be my new favorite. I don’t know where exactly they are, but I think they are in Independence.

  4. On behalf of John’s Spaceage Donuts and downtown Overland Park, thank you for hosting your group at John’s this Saturday. You will not be disappointed. The fritters are the best!! I asked John what he thought of Dunkin’ Donuts moving in down the street. He replied that DD had come and gone once before. John and Brenda’s shop has endured and thrived for years and years and is a true local favorite. Go, John’s Space Age Donuts!!

  5. Thanks for the mention. I agree with Jen, Poppy’s has amazing donuts. Add it to your list! Like John’s, Poppy’s is a great donut shop with sun-bleached counters and plain ol’ coffee.
