As if I don’t watch enough TV

It’s easier now.

After 8 long years as a Comcast customer, through good and bad times, I had to say goodbye today.

It’s a weird thing. I used to hate Comcast with the fire of a thousand suns. Their service sucked, their prices were inflated, but frankly, I didn’t have a lot of options. I live so far South that any additions in Olathe (such as Everest Surewest or AT&T U-verse) were not available.

Until about a month ago.

After much haggling, I finally found out that AT&T U-verse was finally available in our neighborhood. I went through the process of figuring out what they offered and comparing it to what I had with Comcast.

Here’s what they were offering:

  • 4-room DVR
  • HD capabilities in all rooms
  • HBO, Showtime and Starz
  • 3MB Internet

All of that for less than what I was paying for Comcast by about $50.

Not really wanting to go through the hassle of the switch, I called 1-800-COMCAST to see if they could help me out. The guy on the phone basically said, “Sorry dude. Can’t really help.”

So today, Gary from AT&T installed our new U-verse service.

Funny sidebar

@ComcastMelissa reached out to me via Twitter after I stated my situation while AT&T was here. After a pleasant exchange, which I really appreciated, I had to tell her that it was just a little too late.

And it was. I probably should have reached out to the Twitter team a little earlier. The work that Comcast has done in changing my opinion of them is actually quite impressive. As a student of social media, I often use Comcast as my example for success. By all accounts, I should be glad to leave Comcast. But I’m a little sad. They just couldn’t compete on price.

  1. You never looked at Direct tv? In a cost per channel break down they are the cheapest out there.

But AT&T does have some options that Direct TV doesn’t do, but DTV does things that they cant do also, so its kind of a push.

  2. Direct TV is HORRIBLE. a slight wind throws off the cable reception & it goes down all the time! My sister in law has it & it sucks. i’m jealous of the AT&T U-verse. They have it in our area. Just haven’t reached out yet. Going to do that tomorrow!

  3. so i go to att.com and put in my zip code and it comes back and tells me “ATT U-verse MIGHT be available in your area”…that’s great, but who the HELL can tell me if it is or not?
