Pineapple Express

I didn’t know what to think of Pineapple Express before I saw it. I’d heard good things about it, but was hesitant because I think Seth Rogen is kind of overrated. Not only that, but another weed movie from Judd Apatow & Co.? Really? I mean, I know that it’s prevalent throughout Hollywood, but come on…

So when I saw the movie and laughed hysterically, I was really surprised.

The star of this movie isn’t Rogen, it’s Franco, who really deserves his Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical. He totally dives into the role of Saul to the point that you don’t really recognize him (at least by comparison to his previous roles). Franco’s had a good year with Pineapple Express and his turn in Milk that garnered a lot of critical acclaim.

What I enjoyed about this movie was how they really combined the hilarity of a Cheech & Chong weed movie with a huge nod to the great action movies of the 90′s. There were tons of references to the movies I loved as a boy that I noticed as well as more that I probably missed.

I thought it was a lot of fun. I don’t know if I need to see it again, but it was worth the $1 rental.
