Holiday Unemployment

It’s strange.

Being unemployed doesn’t make the holidays any less festive. I had a great birthday and a Merry Christmas. Alli and I have been blessed with such a wonderful family unit. It’s been wonderful spending time with them during this season of merriment.

Here’s hoping that the coming New Year brings not only employment for me, but fulfillment in my career.

Oh, and by the way…if you’ve got any need for a marketing specialist with ninja print and web design skills…let me know.

Merry Christmas

From the Gospel of Luke, Chapter 2:

Now in those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus, that a census be taken of all the inhabited earth. This was the first census taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. And everyone was on his way to register for the census, each to his own city.

Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David, in order to register along with Mary, who was engaged to him, and was with child.

While they were there, the days were completed for her to give birth. And she gave birth to her firstborn son; and she wrapped Him in cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.

In the same region there were some shepherds staying out in the fields and keeping watch over their flock by night. And an angel of the Lord suddenly stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them; and they were terribly frightened. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the people; for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.

“This will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”

And suddenly there appeared with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, ”Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace among men with whom He is pleased.”

When the angels had gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds began saying to one another, “Let us go straight to Bethlehem then, and see this thing that has happened which the Lord has made known to us.” So they came in a hurry and found their way to Mary and Joseph, and the baby as He lay in the manger.

When they had seen this, they made known the statement which had been told them about this Child. And all who heard it wondered at the things which were told them by the shepherds.

But Mary treasured all these things, pondering them in her heart.

The shepherds went back, glorifying and praising God for all that they had heard and seen, just as had been told them.

Merry Christmas.

Cleaning up

My Birthday Haul, originally uploaded by ishane.

I got some great presents for my 32nd birthday. If you go through to the Flickr photo, you’ll see a larger pic with tags as to what exactly everything is.

Thirty-two

I turn 32 years old today.

It seems old, but I don’t feel older. I still don’t have a job…that would be a decent present for me today. Anyone got one of those for me?

We’ve got some decent plans today. We’re gonna go see Yes Man at the Fork & Screen and then we’re meeting up with the whole fam at McCormick & Schmick tonight.

Happy birthday to me!

Pathetic

We all know the Chiefs stink. Carl Peterson getting fired (or resigning or whatever) isn’t going to fix our problems. We still have a complete clown for a coach.

I had said to myself that I wasn’t going to blog about it anymore, but watching the hatchet job he does every Sunday, it’s difficult to keep quiet.

Now that Clark Hunt has done the right thing in getting rid of Carl, he should follow up by removing the coach who single-handedly has dealt this team loss after loss over the pass two years. Watching Miami’s Tony Sparano coach his team to a possible playoff berth one year after their abysmal Cam Cameron 1-15 season assures me that with the right leadership, ANY team can turn it around. There are folks who will say that Carl was the problem and that Herm should be given the chance to “get his guys”. Well, I think that Herm could fill every coaching slot with “his guys” and draft for another 2 years and we wouldn’t be much closer then than we are now. He’s just a bad coach.

He was a bad coach in New York. He lucked into the playoffs on the heels of Dick Vermeil’s guys his first year here and has since turned the Chiefs into the AFC’s version of the Detroit Lions. In fact, if the Lions didn’t exist, I doubt there’d be much discussion as to who the worst team in the NFL is.

Clark Hunt has shown that he’s got the stones to do the right thing. He should do it again and get rid of Herm, start anew and renew the loyal Chiefs fans’ faith in 1 Arrowhead Drive. I think that 2-14 is a good enough excuse to blow it up. Let’s now see if Clark Hunt will do it.

Let’s hope that next week’s second half meltdown to the Bengals is the final time we have to watch Herm stomp the sidelines of the field acting like he cares when he really has absolutely no clue how to coach an NFL team. For the sake of the organization, it’s time to let him go.

My Favorite Christmas Movies

I’ve had a lot of discussions with my family lately regarding the best Christmas movies around. Before I start the list, it’s important for me to point out that while I’m a child of a modern era, I appreciate musicals and respect them. I’m basing my judgment purely on my own enjoyment.

holiday-inn

Since it’s free OnDemand, I watched Holiday Inn with Fred Astaire and Bing Crosby — a movie that my dad claims should be near the top of the list. And it’s a cute movie…the singing and dancing are nice but outside of the nostalgia of the emergence of the song “White Christmas”, it didn’t knock me out. There’s also the added blackface offensiveness, which knocks it back a few notches.

So my list is unabashedly modern but, here’s my top 10 list:

  1. A Christmas Story — I love Ralphie and the whole Red Ryder BB gun gang.
  2. National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation — Simply the funniest Christmas movie ever. It’s frankly one of the funniest movies of all-time. It’s the epitome of the Vacation movies. It’s a close contest between this and #1.
  3. Elf — The best holiday movie released since Christmas Vacation. Will Ferrell is terrific in the role that defines his career – MAN BOY. James Caan is great as his crusty dad and the supporting cast do a wonderful job propping up Will Ferrell. Physical comedy and a creative story — all the makings of a great Christmas movie.
  4. Die Hard — It occurs over Christmas, so it counts. It is the action movie that all other action movies are held up against.
  5. Babes in Toyland — I remember this movie vividly from when I was a kid. Annette Funicello stars in an enjoyable movie that has people being miniaturized and sword fighting. Genius. Also, Ed Wynn as Toymaker.
  6. John Denver and the Muppets: A Christmas Together — It’s a TV movie, but the music is great. Some of the best Christmas songs of my memory.
  7. Home Alone — I’m not a fan of all the subsequent sequels that followed, but the first one is genius. Macaulay Culkin before he went nuts. And if you didn’t cry the first time you saw the neighbor guy reunite with his granddaughter, you don’t have a soul.
  8. The Holiday — Sure, it’s predictable (aren’t most romantic comedies?), but Jack Black is a delight and Cameron Diaz is surprisingly endearing. But the movie is worth seeing for Kate Winslet’s scenes with Eli Wallach.
  9. Scrooged — A dark take on Dicken’s already dark Christmas Carol, modernized with Bill Murray, who my buddy Kevin once called “the bacon of Hollywood…he makes everything better”.
  10. Love Actually — It’s probably a little overly complex…maybe a few too many characters and stories, but it seems to work. Hugh Grant is at his bumbling best and Liam Neeson’s scenes with his kid are great.

That’s right. No It’s a Wonderful Life or Miracle on 34th Street. These are my choices. They’re my opinion. They’re the flicks I like to watch during this time of year. What movies are your favorite to watch at Christmas?

Oversight Needed

 Bernie Madoff

I know that Bernard Madoff is likely guilty.

He cheated investors out of not millions but billions of dollars. He is the essence of greed in a world that is in an increasing struggle. His clients were rich folks, but that doesn’t mean they deserve to be stolen from.

But this isn’t a story about Bernie Madoff, but rather a complaint about the unruly paparazzi. I saw a video clip of the scene when this picture was taken on the Today Show this morning. I saw a man trying to walk down the street in Manhattan accosted by a swarm of hungry paparazzi so desperate to get “the shot” that one of them even committed light assault by pushing Madoff back far enough for him to get a better picture.

If we can provide oversight to the Big Three, why can’t we rein in these paparazzi who are completely out of control? I know that most of these folks probably should understand that it is part of what comes with being a celebrity, but everyone has a right to privacy that is just not afforded to folks when they are considered a part of the “public domain”.

All for a good shot? It’s a good thing I’m not a celebrity because I’d regularly be appearing before the courts for knocking fools with cameras out.

Opacity Awesomeness

Web designers around the world swoon every advent season when Drew McClellan puts up his 24 ways and this year was no exception. With a sexy new design from Made By Elephant, 24 Ways was back with great new tools and an extra special gift under the tree for visitors to the site using a browser that supported the CSS3 spec — opacity.

The subtlety of 24 ways use of alpha channels combined with the release of Wordpress 2.7 (which proudly powers this site) inspired me to take a more comprehensive crack at a new blog design. Feed readers, I know you probably don’t care much about what I’ve done here, but it took me much longer than I had imagined. Converting those hex colors I wanted to use for my scheme into the more complex RGB colors was arduous, but if you visit my site now with a newer browser (Firefox 3 or Safari are preferred, although Google Chrome should work), you should get the full translucent experience.

I’ve also taken Derek Powazek’s advice to embrace my bottom by pushing some of that sidebar stuff to the bottom of the page. I’ve lost all the links from the sidebar…I plan on adding a page of just links to the blogs that I read, but for now, I hope you’ll manage without my referral links.

You’ll also notice at right the many other places you might find me online. I use Twitter more than any of them. Some of the others I’ve signed up for more with the intention of seeing what they were about than anything else.

Anyway, I’d like to hear your thoughts on the new design. Especially if they confirm my awesomeness.

Now, on to the next project…

Oh, and by the way…

My Coldhearted post was my 700th.

And I have an interview tomorrow.

So I’ve got that going for me.
