Halloween is dumb.
I’m fairly certain that I didn’t like Halloween when I was a kid – I just saw it as an excuse to get sick off candy (I wonder why I’m worried about diabetes…hmmm).
I came by my loathe for Halloween honestly. I remember being maybe 13 when my mom first showed me how to detract trick-or-treaters (outside and inside lights off, hide in basement).
I don’t understand how this crazy ancient Celtic pagan holiday (Samhain – the festival of livestock slaughter, bonfires and masks that signified the end of the harvest season) became the entire month of October. There is a house in our neighborhood that has a whole graveyard, a couple of dementors on the edges of the driveway and zombies littering their yard. Some people put more effort into the “Halloween Season” than they do to taking care of their yard.
Now, I certainly don’t have kids and I might feel differently if I did (seeing my 14-month old niece dressed as a monkey…pretty cute), but since I don’t, I avoid Halloween at every turn. The last time I dressed up was about 7 years ago when both Alli and I put on afro wigs and horrible flannel shirts and went as “Bob Ross”.
Overall, I can’t put a big reason on why I don’t like Halloween…I just think it’s a waste of time and a contributor to early juvenile diabetes and obesity. I think we have a big enough problem with that as it is.
Flame away.
Katie has been talking about Halloween for several weeks now. I woke her up this morning and told her Happy Halloween. She was up in a flash and ready to get her costume for her party today. I just love seeing the kids all dressed up and showing off their imaginations with their costumes. To me, it is more fun with a child. Katie gets such a thrill when someone talks to her about her costume and then she just grins so big back at me. She feels so important and that is what makes it great to me.
Wow. I bet your a real blast a Christmas time. Boo Humbug!
;-)
Give out pencils. Get your house egged.
Jen, I think Halloween is fine for kids. But, that whole “imagination in costumes” was more back in our childhood. There’s a huge industry for pre-fab costumes these days. You don’t even have to try.
Emaw, Christmas is my favorite time of year. It doesn’t hurt that my birthday is two days before, but I love the snow and the warming up by the fire and the giving of presents and the baby Jesus.
Chimpo, That would assume that I’ll be home to give something out. Nope.
You are such a party pooper. I agree that Halloween is silly, but we need more silly in this world. Take some time out to be silly and give kids some candy. you can’t blame child obesity and diabetes on 1 day or even one month of halloween. That in itself is silly.
I cant go all day without putting my two cents in. I agree with Brett; one day of candy is not to blame for childhood obesity. If anything, it finally gets the kids out of the house for some exercise. Its up to the parents to be responsible with the amount of candy the kids get. Maybe do a candy swap for something more enjoyable like a movie or small toy.
I agree that it has gotten too commercialized but what holiday in the US hasn’t? I love Halloween, always have, always will. Peace out.
you are such a Halloween Nazi! lighten up dude. you’re like the guy who doesn’t tip his waiter because he doesn’t feel like he has to reward someone for doing their job. just suck it up and stop being such a scrooge. just because mom wouldn’t let you dress up as madonna for Halloween when you were 9 doesn’t mean the rest of the kids on your street should have to deal with your negativity.
just wait for valentine’s day, people.
Don’t let the pagan BS enter the picture. Do some research on Christmas if you want a contemporary holiday built on a foundation of paganism. At least Halloween isn’t built on the pressure of commerce and faux charitableness. Halloween is just fun. Stupid, yes, but harmless.
