Alli’s Home!

Some people have the ability to take time away from their spouse in stride. Whether it’s business or pleasure, some couples don’t have a problem spending time apart. Some say it’s healthy for their relationships to take a break and others have jobs that require travel.

Me…I hate time away from Alli. All I do with my free time is watch bad movies (this week’s was Semi-Pro), spend PayPal money and try to win an entry into World Series of Poker on FullTiltPoker.com. Yeah…I’m that guy.

This week was one of those guaranteed times that we spend apart every year. It was the dreaded week of drill team camp, where Alli goes to Emporia State with her sister and the high school dance team that they coach and is basically incommunicado.

She got home today and it was like my body felt normal again. It’s amazing when you find that person who actually has a physical calming presence on you. When you find it, you don’t want to let it go. So I won’t.

A new charitable cause…

Steve Jobs presents the new Apple iPhone 3G

As someone who has been a loyal Sprint user for many years, I have been really looking forward to the release of the Samsung Instinct, a phone that many are calling one of the first decent competitors to the iPhone. When the iPhone first came out, I was jealous, but it was way too expensive to even consider. Tack that onto the fact that I am a member of Sprint’s Friends and Family plan, which makes things all the more inexpensive.

I’d go as far to say that I was excited for the release of the Instinct…

Until today.

Today, my favorite company in the world released the second-generation of their industry-changing device. There are haters that don’t want to admit Apple’s greatness, but those people are kidding themselves. This is a phone that has sold 6 million units in ONE YEAR.

To put that into perspective…even though it was released mid-way through the year, the iPhone was the 2nd most popular smartphone in the U.S. (3rd globally) and outsold all Windows Mobile devices combined.

The iPhone 3G isn’t really a massive update overall. However, the fact that it is adding 3G wireless connectivity and dropping its price by half (the 8GB iPhone went from $399 to $199), combined with the best operating system a phone has ever seen…well…needless to say, I’m reconsidering whether or not I want to stick with Sprint.

So here’s what I’m proposing…those of you that helped me raise money to buy a dairy cow back in January…I’m giving you another opportunity to give.

If you donate enough money for me to buy an iPhone, I’ll give up red meat for the rest of the year.

You read that right…I’ll give up red meat through the holidays if you help me buy an iPhone.

Friday Feast

Appetizer
When you drink soda/pop/coke, do you prefer to drink it from the bottle, a can, or after pouring it into a cup?

I like my soda on ice in a cup. But I’m non-discriminating. I’ll drink it in a bottle or a can too. I’m an equal-opportunity beverage consumer.

Soup
What television show are you willing to stay up late to watch?

Top Chef is one of the only shows that I want to watch on the same day that it airs. I still watch it on the DVR so I can fast-forward through the commercials. There’s enough product placement during the show (Gladware, Kenmore, Toyota, whatever else they’re pimping that week), that I don’t need all the extra Bravo advertisements for shows I’m going to watch anyway.

Salad
Name one person, place, or thing you think of as brilliant.

Besides my wife, of course? This may come off as a little cheesy, but I think people who convey truth in what they do, whether it be writing books, acting in movies, writing songs, painting pictures…any form of art that conveys truth…that’s brilliance to me.

Main Course
Would you be willing to work 4 10-hour days instead of 5 8-hour days in order to save gas?

Absolutely. I wouldn’t even have to think about it. I’d do it to save gas, but I’d also like to do it to have lots of 3-day weekends.

Dessert
If you were a superhero, what would you call yourself?

I’d be The Sasquatchewan, a Canadian hairy monster who scares babies and uses their tears to solve droughts all over the world.

Logtar took a pass on the Friday Feast today, so I got it from Sit. Stay. Good Blog.

Prince Caspian

Prince Caspian Movie PosterTuesday night, we went to see The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian.

With this and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, I’ve been reminded of why I love going to the movies.

Prince Caspian picks up about a year after the end of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe with the Pevensie children back in England after having saved Narnia from the White Witch. They seem restless having spent like, 18 years, in Narnia and returning having not aged at all.

Meanwhile, back in Narnia, Prince Caspian is on the run and he…well…I don’t want to ruin the story.

But I’ll say this…it was really good. If you liked the first movie, you’ll really enjoy the second movie. It draws upon the same themes, but it’s a little more grown up. If you compare The Chronicles of Narnia to the Harry Potter stories, you definitely see the progression of the characters from story to story.

Much of the story (as was the case in the first movie) is told through young Lucy’s eyes and that’s to the benefit because the girl who is played with so much joy and brilliance by Georgie Henley. She totally overshadows the rest of the Pevensie kids. The only character giving her any competition for chewing the screen was relative newcomer Ben Barnes as Prince Caspian.

The Chronicles of Narnia are enjoyable stories and watching them being brought so well to life on screen has been great. The Voyage of the Dawn Treader and The Silver Chair are already scheduled for 2010 and 2011…we’ll see if they can get through all seven books.

Until then, I enjoyed the movie a lot. If you liked the first one, you’ll like this one. It’s just a fun movie that makes you smile.

Here but not

I’m still here.

My mind’s not on it, though. I haven’t had the blogging bug these days. I’ve got other things on my mind…work, weddings, church, etc.

There’s plenty going on, but I needed a small break.

I’m back. So here goes…
