Why David Cook should win

I’ve never been a person to hide my hometown shame.

David Cook

There’s a large part of me that wants David Cook to win because he hails from Kansas City. But for those that aren’t from Kansas City, here are some other reasons why David Cook should be the next American Idol:

  1. He’s genuine. Say what you will about David Archuleta, I just don’t buy his “aw shucks” schlock routine. I believe that David Cook believes the words he sings. That was evident tonight.
  2. He does things on his own terms. The difference in maturity between the two Davids tonight was evident. Instead of choosing the songs that America would like (as Archuleta and his father did), David Cook chose songs that HE wanted to sing. I think that shows more courage than choosing cheesy “In this Moment” ballads. The title of this reason could also be, “He’s not a puppet.”
  3. Chris Daughtry should have won. I know that was two seasons ago, but America has a chance to make up for past wrongs. Taylor Hicks and Jordin Sparks could be more forgotten than they already are if American Idol were to actually crown a rocker as champion.
  4. He wasn’t hand-picked by the judges. Just as last season was skewed to favor Jordin Sparks over Blake Lewis, this season has been heavily skewed for David Archuleta to win. He got Neil Diamond’s two most famous songs. He has either had the first pick the whole time, or there’s been a producer (or his dad) in his ear the whole season telling him which songs were the most sugary and would generate the most sympathy for him. David Cook has done everything against the grain, from his completely different arrangements to choosing songs that people might not necessarily know (or that he has not yet sung, like tonight with his choice of Collective Soul’s “The World I Know”).
  5. He will sell more records than David Archuleta. This is a fact. David Archuleta is like the Jordin Sparks of this season. Good voice, malleable, BORING. David Cook will make a better record for the reasons above and more people will buy it. This is the truth. I will not be proven wrong by time on this one.

So there you go. Five good reasons why you should vote for David Cook over David Archuleta. Either way, he’s going to make a record and either way, he’ll sell more units than his younger counterpart. So light up those phones, America.

  1. I agree with every single word you just typed! I don’t get how people think he’s really going to be successful “in the real world of pop music”. Are non-AI fans going to buy his crap? Nope. Not like they do Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood and Chris Daughtry.

Hopping off my soapbox to say, “Nice Post, man!”

  2. i agree. and i am pretty sure i said it first, that daughtry would outsell any of the idol contestants that finished better than him that season. he is by far, the most successful non-winner, if not the best ever to come out of american idol. although carrie underwood is really good, daughtry’s entire album rocks.

david cook SHOULD win. correct. he has proven that the entire season. he is more marketable, original, and he seems truly genuine. archuleta, not-so-much. archuleta has a great voice, but he is not marketable. he is only marketable in a clay aiken kind of way.

i called it with taylor hicks, people. i told all you idiots that voted for him that he would be a failure and an idol joke. good post. i guess i should have written my own post about this since I just wrote a book in your comments section.

  3. I couldn’t agree with you more. I wasn’t watching American Idol when Daughtry was on but it is inconceivable to me that Hicks won over him. I am a HUGE Daughtry fan.

Probably the only thing I would disagree with you on is Jordin Sparks. I was a fan of hers from the beginning and actually the judges favored Melinda and LaKisha more than her.

But as you saw from my blog I am an even BIGGER David Cook fan. I went and saw him when he came back to Blue Springs on May 9th and I am so proud that he is from the KC area. I thought it was all over last night when the judges spoke but it looks like the fans may have spoken louder than Simon. We will find out tonight.

    Great post!!

  4. I agree he’s the best; even though I don’t get to watch much (no TV before 8:30ish in our house usually). But…would he be better off not winning so he could actually make the music he wants? I think Daughtry has been so successful since he didn’t have the AI contract over his head for the first year.
    My two cents.

  5. I am afraid I agree with Laura. DC is by far my favorite of the AI group this year but look at what Kelly Clarkson went through this year – she wanted to write her own music and put out an album she believed in and the record company pulled all money, publicity and promotions from her. Her best music yet – and people don’t know about it, radio didn’t play it etc. Daughtry did great because he is a true talent – so is David Cook – win or lose, he is full of talent, people want to sign him and hopefully gets to make true music.

  6. I don’t watch the show, so my view may be a little different. I don’t like most “pop” music, preferring old school metal but I do recognize talent. I never heard of anybody who won AI that sounded like they worth a damn (even tho as a non viewer I was pulling for fellow fat man Rubin).

Anyway, back to THIS competition. I am almost sick to death with the David C bandwagon. I in Blue Springs almost daily, and everybody there acts like they are his best damn friend. Seriously, if the check out girl reminds me to vote for this kid again she is getting a spork in the eye!

On the other hand, everything I have read (and not just by KCers) says he might be the real deal. They say if it was talent not popularity he would be a shoe in. So even tho I know it probably means another gorram parade, I am kind of rootin for him.
