Martin Luther King, Jr.

I had the privilege of preaching at a contemporary service in Lee’s Summit yesterday. Our church observes the Sunday before Martin Luther King, Jr. Day as Racial Justice Day and a lot of our service yesterday morning was focused around Dr. King and his incalculable influence on the Civil Rights movement and the state of racial relations to this day.

In my post this morning, I linked to the YouTube video of Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech, which is, in my opinion, one of the most inspirational speeches of all time. During part of the service, we watched the crescendo of King’s speech and as I always do, I got goosebumps.

I then had the challenge of following his message with a message of my own. To say it was challenging is an understatement. I admire Dr. King and his commitment to his dream, a commitment that ultimately cost him his life. His passion and belief inspired many people to believe in their own capabilities and to more actively work for racial justice in an antiquated society that could not understand the sweeping changes that needed to occur.

I was born almost a decade after Martin Luther King, Jr., was assassinated in Memphis. The fact that I can sit here and talk about the inspiration he is to me is a testament to his influence and the power of his message. I’m a white kid who grew up in a suburb of a Midwest town. There were less than a dozen African-American kids at my high school. I don’t claim to know any measure of the suffering that has occurred over the many years of prejudice. However, I can promise to make sure that I do my best to see that Dr. King’s message continues to come to fruition.

Even now, 40 years after his death, we are not there yet. We’ve made strides, but we must continue to persevere toward his vision.

And if America is to be a great nation this must become true. So let freedom ring from the prodigious hilltops of New Hampshire. Let freedom ring from the mighty mountains of New York. Let freedom ring from the heightening Alleghenies of Pennsylvania!

Let freedom ring from the snowcapped Rockies of Colorado!

Let freedom ring from the curvaceous slopes of California!

But not only that; let freedom ring from Stone Mountain of Georgia!

Let freedom ring from Lookout Mountain of Tennessee!

Let freedom ring from every hill and molehill of Mississippi. From every mountainside, let freedom ring.

And when this happens, when we allow freedom to ring, when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God’s children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual, “Free at last! free at last! Thank God Almighty, we are free at last!”

Buy a Cow with me

Many thanks to the link and radio mention from Tony this morning.

I thought I’d give a little update on how we’re doing so far on the Buy a Cow project.

We are 30% of the way there!

In the comments, Chimpotle posed the question:

What if you don’t get enough money? Will you get the llama instead?

To answer the question publicly: No. The principle of the project started with a cow and I’m hoping for it to end with a cow. So either I will abstain from eating red meat as long as it takes to raise the money for 1 dairy cow or I’ll find a corporate sponsor or something like that to make up the rest of the money. I want to buy at least one cow. It would be awesome if we can buy more than one. To donate, click below:

Hulu? I do.

Many thanks to Travis for notifying me of this service, although for all the money that the networks have put into it, I was expecting something that actually worked consistently.

For those of you that have no idea what I’m talking about, Hulu is free video service much like YouTube, only the major TV networks have put their weight (and considerable bank accounts) behind it because it is supported by advertising embedded into each video. The site allows users to watch their favorite NBC/Fox/etc. shows (somewhat) on demand.

Sure, people will say “it’s in beta” or “maybe it’s a user error”, but thus far, I’ve still been unimpressed. I wish that I could find shows easier and I wish that they had the full Season Two and Three of Arrested Development.

It’s a nice way to spend lunch at your desk, watching a show that is no longer on the air and you are too cheap to pony up the dough for, but my company has very stringent network use policies (which may be a contributing factor to performance, although I’ve experienced similar performance delays at home).

Anyway, I thought it was worth mentioning. It’s still in private beta, so you have to sign up to be e-mailed access, but it only took a day or two for me to get on the list. For an idea of what it looks like, check this out:

Technical Note

I’ve been having some WordPress/GoDaddy issues on the administration side of this site. If you’ve submitted a comment previously and it has been slow to be approved, I have now remedied the situation. I was not receiving notifications of comments (for some weird reason that I still don’t understand). As far as I can tell, it boiled down to the php_mailer function in WordPress not being supported by GoDaddy hosting, at least in this release.

I found a fantastic plugin that sends notification e-mails using SMTP instead of PHPMail.

Sweet.

Don’t forget about my pledge to not eat red meat. Help me buy a cow from Heifer International.

Macbook Air

How sweet is this?

The only drawback to its awesomeness is its lack of an internal optical drive, but I suppose that most folks using a subnotebook could care less. Plus, Apple can sell an external Superdrive for $99 now.

This mother is THIN. I’m still leaning toward the standard Macbook, but it certainly is an appealing option. I just want to be able to watch DVDs that I own without having to import them using HandBrake.

As for the rest of the announcements…

iTunes Movie Rentals – everyone saw that coming.

Time Capsule – cool feature for Leopard users. Wireless backup. Pretty neat.

New iPhone and iPod Touch features – The Touch is much more appealing now that it has Mail. Until the iPhone comes to Sprint, I won’t buy it. I MIGHT buy an iPod touch now.

So Dumb

I got a ticket this morning on the way into work.

I was going 55 in a 45 down a hill on Shawnee Mission Parkway. I knew I was busted as soon as the cop moved an inch…I just hoped to get let off on a warning, but those Mission cops are sticklers. What sucks is that I’ve been passed by people going 65-70 mph on that same stretch of road.

Since when does a ticket for 10 miles per hour over cost $110?

NOT a good way to start my day.

Billy, You’re On My List

Billy Bush Headshot

Watching the “Golden Globes Winners Special” tonight was painful. I love everything about award shows – the glamour, the speeches, all of it. Alli and I will sit through hours of award shows, but these 1-hour specials are just lame. I would have rather read a press release than have had to watch Billy Bush and Nancy O’Dell opine on what the big surprises were of the night and act as though their broadcast was anything but useless.

There’s nothing good about Billy Bush. The guy is a moron.

I was disappointed that Juno didn’t win any awards tonight. I would have liked to see Ellen Page and the movie pick up a couple statues. To be honest, I couldn’t tell you anything of consequence other than that the Pivs won deservingly again for Entourage. It was a very bizarre night and one I’m soon to forget.

And that Billy Bush better watch his back.

UPDATE: Read Jake’s hilarious post about the writers’ strike and how dumb it is.
