This is Getting Old

I’m tired of this, I really am.

The other 50 members of the Kansas City Chiefs should apologize to Tony Gonzalez, Jared Allen and Donnie Edwards. Those 3 are seemingly the only members of the team that have yet to quit on the season. It’s hard to blame any of them, considering their head coach probably isn’t qualified to coach a Division I-AA college team.

But then again, you wonder if we were ever in a position to win this season. Perhaps I was overly optimistic when I picked them to go 9-7 and miss the playoffs this year. My second (non-Larry Johnson) prediction was a lot more accurate, picking them to go 5-11.

The AFC West is really bad this year. I don’t think anyone could have predicted how much the Chargers would struggle this year under Norv Turner. I thought it was a bad idea for them to fire Schottenheimer last year, but the Chargers could win out and still finish 11-5. Still, watching them today made you think that they are absolutely not the same team that went 14-2 last year. As much as the Chargers tried to lose, the Chiefs are just so much worse.

The Chiefs are now 2-7 at home this year. Before the season started, I was talking with some friends about where we thought the Chiefs would finish this year and I think I said something brilliant to the effect of: “Arrowhead Stadium is good for 6 wins per year.” Apparently, I forgot to factor in the fact that Herm Edwards is an absolutely dreadful coach.

I’d rather see Mark Mangino’s belly on the sidelines every Sunday than Herm’s eyebrows and the biggest difference between the coaches is that Mangino knows how to prepare his team for home conference games, whereas Edwards looks completely unprepared every single Sunday (although this is not only reserved for Arrowhead).

I really am frustrated and excited at the same time. Part of me hopes that the lack of fan support, the dropping profit margins for Clark Hunt, and the complete loss of respect for a storied franchise might in some way embarrass the Chiefs front office into making across-the-board changes.

(sigh)

Well…one can hope.

I want to be sunnier about our team because I am one of those people who will accept a losing season if I am confident it will help the team down the road. But I’m a realist. We don’t have Scott Pioli in the front office making good decisions. We have Carl Peterson for 3 more years. That’s an eternity in pro sports.

  1. It was old when they hired a coach with an overall losing record 2 years ago.

The only 2 ways to fix this are hiring Bill Cowher, and getting rid of Carl.
