Why Nickelback Sucks

OK, so I got this link from kottke and I had to share it. This website has a audio demonstration of how Nickelback essentially recorded the EXACT SAME song TWICE and managed to make MTV hits out of both songs.

You need speakers or headphones for the link because the site plays both songs at the same time, one through one speaker and one through the other. You’ll notice the words are different but that’s about it.

Follow Through

OK, so I realize I’m a bit behind on the blogging. But here’s something fun:

I beat my brother last night heads-up to win my first poker game in a long while. It was a good win, probably the best poker I’ve played in a long time and I was able to outlast 10 other guys in doing it. Not a bad night of poker.

I was chip lead for most of the evening, but once we combined our two tables, I lost a few hands and others picked up a couple big ones leaving me about 4th in chips. I had one huge takedown of Justin that nearly increased my chips by about 50% and then I lost a huge one to Jake when I called his all-in with [cards]Ah 8d[/cards] with my [cards]Ks Kc[/cards]. He caught an Ace on the river, which gave him a monster stack. Once Darin went out, it was brother vs. brother for the first time in…well…ever…I think.

After going back and forth a couple times, I beat Jake on a couple huge hands and I managed to catch top pair on the final hand flop. Jake called with middle pair and my pair of sixes held up and I won (crazy, I know!). Thanks go out to Darin and Jackie for hosting last night. Jackie provided the rice krispie treats, which as always were unbelievably good. Winning always makes you feel good.

Until next week, that is.

For about the last year, I’ve been selling a bunch of shirts through CafePress.com that feature Ari Gold’s signature catch phrase, “Let’s Hug it Out, Bitch” on them in a sexy typeface with a very simple embellishment on the o in “out”.

I did a search for the shirt just to see if it would come up at all and I wasn’t surprised not to find it on the front page. I was, however, extremely surprised to find this blatant rip-off (and quite ugly) version of my original design.

Now I realize that I in no way have any copyright to the phrase and that’s part of the beauty of CafePress, but for someone to just flat out rip my design off (and then put it in the absolutely awful Banana Split font they used – yuck!) really annoys me. I realize that I was not the first – nor will I be the last – person to make a shirt with that phrase on it. There are a bunch just on the first page of my search

Look, I don’t make any money off CafePress. Not enough to write home about at least. It’s just the principle of it…well, it’s a little irritating. I imagine that very few people feel sorry for me, but it annoyed me today. Isn’t that what a blog is for? A place to put the things that annoy you?

Anyway, I don’t know if this even remotely interests anyone, but if you’d like to buy a Let’s Hug It Out T-shirt, please check out either one of my CafePress stores.

Entourage is BACK!

One of my favorite shows on TV is finally back for the second half of its 3rd season.

Last we left them, the following things had happened:

  • Ari had screwed Vince out of the Joey Ramone project because he mistreated the producer who had the project
  • Turtle got screwed by Saigon, his first music client
  • Drama got cast in an Ed Burns TV pilot (classic scene was Drama almost psyching himself out of the role)
  • And Vince and Eric fired Ari

It was a dramatic mini-cliffhanger, but one we’ve seen before. I’ve been anxious for the show to return because it is great and I’m anxious to see what is going to happen now.

So last night’s episode had the following:

  • Vince’s new agent (Carla “Son-in-Law” Gugino) taking him to a Laker game and seeing Ari, and also trying to convince her client to take a period film for his next project
  • Vince’s birthday party (which Turtle ingeniously had sponsored by Skyy Vodka, Victoria’s Secret and a bunch of other corporate sponsors aboard the Queen Mary…Turtle is awesome)
  • Ari delivering the Medellin script, claiming that Benicio del Toro is backing out, thus giving Vinnie the film he’s been wanting to do since the beginning of season one
  • Johnny Drama being on a billboard (seriously, how pathetic is that dude? He stands in front of his own billboard and has Turtle take pictures of him until people recognize him)
  • Ari and Lloyd (any episode that has a 2-minute scene with these two is worth the other 24 minutes of the episode)

I thought that overall, it was a decent episode…a good start to the second half of the season. I’m hoping that the next episode builds on it…I imagine that Carla Gugino will be around at least 5 episodes, but I foresee Vince returning to Ari by the end of the season. I’m just glad the show is back.

Welcome to the world!

Miss Camryn Avery!

Brett and Sarah welcomed a nine-pound baby girl into the world on Saturday. According to the Picture Mail I received on my phone, Mom and daughter are doing quite well while dad…well, we always wondered about him.

Congrats you guys!

Top 10 Trilogies or Series of All-Time

OK, so I was having an e-mail discussion with some friends and we were discussing what the best trilogies of all-time might be. I think that everyone will agree that if you have that discussion, the Godfather is almost always hands-down the winner. The only problem is that I’ve never seen the Godfather (I know…I know).

Anyway, I wanted to rank my top 10 Trilogies of All-Time. I’m going to put out the following rules:

  1. There should be no changing of the main characters.
  2. All movies should work by themselves
  3. The movies should enrich the other movies in the series.
  4. Must include more than just a sequel.

Those are the rules. Some of the below might break them in some ways, but they are good enough to overcome the rules, they will be included. So without further adieu…

The List:

  1. Original Star Wars Trilogy – Will always be #1 to me. I’ve always loved these movies, ever since I was a kid.
  2. The Matrix Trilogy – So it isn’t great at adhering to #2 on my list, but I loved these movies. I loved how Reloaded set up what was going to happen in Revolutions and I even loved Revolutions.
  3. Indiana Jones Trilogy – I don’t think that there has ever been a more likable hero than Indiana Jones. He’s a man’s man and a woman’s man. Plus, the movies were all genius. I’m not sure we need a fourth installment, but I’ll go see it all the same.
  4. The Lord of the Rings – Despite their excessive length, these movies RULE THEM ALL.
  5. The Die Hard Trilogy – I can’t even begin to express how excited I am about the new one coming out this summer. John McClaine is one of the great characters of all-time. I still cringe thinking about him walking barefoot across the glass in the first movie. Ouch.
  6. The Back to the Future Trilogy – As much as the third one sucked, I still loved these movies. Michael J. Fox has spent the rest of his career trying to re-capture the genius of Marty McFly.
  7. The Terminator Trilogy – Arnold Schwartzennager at his awesome best. Hasta la Awesome baby.
  8. The Austin Powers Trilogy – This wasn’t on my original list because the first time I watched Goldmember, I just didn’t think it was all that funny. After a couple more times watching it, I really started to find its hilarity (not the unintentional hilarity of Beyonce’s awful acting, but the real hilarity). Plus, the scene where Austin and his dad are talking to each other in “English” English cracks me up.
  9. The “Vacation” series – I know that Vegas Vacation is pretty awful, but the other 3 are absolutely genius. Sure, they ignore rule #1 for Rusty and Audrey for all the movies, but still…Chevy Chase is just so gosh darn funny. Christmas Vacation is a top 5 comedy of all-time…not just a Christmas movie. It’s THAT. FUNNY.
  10. The Pirates of the Caribbean movies – OK, so At World’s End doesn’t come out for another month or so, but the first two were great. Johnny Depp is so brilliant as Captain Jack Sparrow that you have to appreciate these movies. Plus, you have to appreciate how they made something totally sweet out of a relatively lame ride at Disney World.

So what do you think of my list?

Planning for Italy

Alli and I have been researching planning for our trip to Italy this summer for our trip to Italy this summer for Alli’s 30th Birthday. We are so excited. I’ve never been to Italy and Alli’s never been outside the country save our honeymoon in St. Lucia and a trip to Grand Cayman when she was in college.

When I was a junior in college, my parents took my brother and me to Europe for a short 15-day trip. Alli and I will be in Italy for almost 3 weeks. When I went with my parents, we spent a couple days in Brussels (best Pommes Frites ANYWHERE), a couple days in Amsterdam (cool city, but I don’t think we were there nearly long enough to appreciate it), a few days in London (awesome…loved London), and several days in Paris and Le Mans in France (for the 24-hour race that a friend of my dad’s was participating in).

Anyway, our time in Paris seemed really rushed and I am really excited to spend some time there looking around the city. Alli and I are scheduled to go to the Louvre on the first of the month in July…the Louvre offers free admission on the first of the month. Very cool. That’s one thing that we didn’t get to see when we were in Paris the first time. I am kind of glad in a way because I’ll get to experience it for the first time with Alli who will help me with appreciating the vastness of the museum.

So we are flying in and out of Paris and in between, we are spending some time in Venice, Florence, Rome, and the Amalfi Coast. Everything I’ve heard about Amalfi is that we won’t regret being there.

Planning for a trip of this magnitude is stressful, though. Especially if you are like me and you lose your passport just as you are getting ready to book your tickets (no worries, I found it today…PHEW!).

I know that there are a couple people out there who’ve been to Italy…any suggestions or pointers on places to see?

Star Wars is Second?

Star Wars was SECOND as the Top Sci-Fi movie of all-time as voted on by the readers of SFX Magazine.

Second? That’s not that bad, right?

So what was first?

2001: A Space Odyssey? HAL says no.
Alien? No love for stomach parasites, I guess.
Terminator? Hasta la vista, baby.
Blade Runner? I’m assuming that the presence of Harrison Ford twice on the list split the vote because it wasn’t first either.
Planet of the Apes? The damn dirty apes were robbed.
The Matrix? Apparently innovation in filmmaking doesn’t matter so much.

Serenity.

That’s right. A sci-fi movie that NOBODY saw, was voted the #1 Sci-fi movie of ALL-TIME. Perhaps the readers of SFX Magazine didn’t quite understand the question, because that’s the only explanation I can find as to why this movie would even be in the top 10. Serenity was based on a CANCELLED TV show called Firefly. Star Wars (and others listed above) shouldn’t even have to pee in the same POOL as this piece of junk. (Granted, I haven’t seen it, but I’ve seen everything else on the list.)

In even more ridiculousness, Serenity received TWICE as many votes as Star Wars. Now that’s just dumb.

Can someone please EXPLAIN this to me?
