Star Wars is Second?

Star Wars was SECOND as the Top Sci-Fi movie of all-time as voted on by the readers of SFX Magazine.

Second? That’s not that bad, right?

So what was first?

2001: A Space Odyssey? HAL says no.
Alien? No love for stomach parasites, I guess.
Terminator? Hasta la vista, baby.
Blade Runner? I’m assuming that the presence of Harrison Ford twice on the list split the vote because it wasn’t first either.
Planet of the Apes? The damn dirty apes were robbed.
The Matrix? Apparently innovation in filmmaking doesn’t matter so much.

Serenity.

That’s right. A sci-fi movie that NOBODY saw, was voted the #1 Sci-fi movie of ALL-TIME. Perhaps the readers of SFX Magazine didn’t quite understand the question, because that’s the only explanation I can find as to why this movie would even be in the top 10. Serenity was based on a CANCELLED TV show called Firefly. Star Wars (and others listed above) shouldn’t even have to pee in the same POOL as this piece of junk. (Granted, I haven’t seen it, but I’ve seen everything else on the list.)

In even more ridiculousness, Serenity received TWICE as many votes as Star Wars. Now that’s just dumb.

Can someone please EXPLAIN this to me?

  1. Ballot stuffing, of course. Serenity fans (aka Browncoats) are rabid, and Star Wars is 30 years old.
I saw Serenity, it was good, but it was no Star Wars. Welcome to democracy: tyranny of the majority.

  2. Im sure most of the people who voted for Serenity are young pimpley face kids who don’t have anything else to do. Also I’m sure most of them haven’t even seen the original Star Wars. But I will say that Serenity is in my top ten. But I wouldn’t say that it is the Top Sci-Fi movie.

  3. Star Wars is first on all my best of movie lists. I’ve never heard of Serenity. Then again I’ve rarely heard of any of the movies that win the Oscars. I’m just a guy who knows what movies I like when I see them. By the way, Blades of Glory was hilarious.

  4. I never saw a single episode of Firefly before I watched Serenity. Fortunately, I had a Firefly junkie sitting next to me whispering all the little inside details in my ear.

It really is a great movie, and I think it is worlds better than Star Wars ever good have been. Joss Whedon is an amazing writer and director. However, Star Wars is a space opera, and Serenity is a space western. It’s almost like comparing Madame Butterfly to The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly.

My fave sci-fi movie is still The Wrath of Khan. The director’s cut just arrived today in my Netflix, as a matter of fact.

  5. Serenity is pretty good. Not great, but original enough that is definitely warrants being in the top 10. If it were my list, it would have been a tie between Blade Runner and Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.
