Shane, this is an amazing recollection of 9/11. I was still in high school and I remember just feeling confused about what was going on. I remember being concerned for my aunt who works at 1 Wall Street (Bank of NY) and my brother who was in the air when it happened but it took quite awhile for the reality of what happened to settle. It's amazing to hear my aunt tell her story - her building was evacuated when the first plane hit and she was walking home across the Brooklyn bridge when the first tower collapsed. She said it took hours to get home because the dust and debris made it difficult to see. I can't even imagine what I would have done if I were in her shoes.

brother, after re-reading that post, my eyes got a little watery. i remember that day so clearly. i remember you calling me to tell me what was going on, and I immediately called dad, but I couldn't get ahold of him for about an hour. scared the crap out of me, but i finally was able to reach him. what an emotional time for everyone in America. we had business class that morning, but I think KU cancelled the rest of classes after that for the day. thanks for reminding us how awesome it is to be an AMERICAN.

Shane,
You are a fabulous storyteller, even sad stories. I think you and Alli should write children's books. You are a great author and your wife...what an artist.

I remember watching the movie "Pearl Harbor" with my Dad in Sioux Falls, SD a couple months before 9/11. We were on a camping trip to celebrate my graduation from GU. There were a bunch of dumb teenagers laughing and making fun when the bombing scenes were going on and all the burned people were coming to the nurses in the film. My Dad couldn't understand how they could laugh and make fun of something that actually happened. I explained to him that to my generation, war was something entertaining that happened in the movies. Most of us weren't old enough to fear our country being attacked or people we knew being killed by terrorists. I figured that until our country was attacked again by a force just as powerful as our own, my generation would never understand the cost of war. Three months later, we all understood and are still dealing with that cost.

I remember that day too well and I remember our frantic emails to the posse that day. I was at work that morning at Experian in Schaumburg, Illinois. If I recall correctly I was avoiding the workday ahead like every other day at Experian. I first heard what happened from you, Shane, and from there it seemed like the day flew by while at the same time standing still. I had several family members that lived in New York and the Washington DC area, so I was spending all day trying to make sure everyone was far from the disaster. I never heard back from my brother who was living in Virginia, it turned out he was in Annan, Jordan for work. My mom was the one that told me that, I had no idea he was even out of town. Needless to say, that was a little unsettling. In the end, I knew noone that was hurt or killed but my dad lost some coworkers and people he knew in the past. I think it got to him pretty good. My aunt had a girlfriend that was one of those people that posted pictures and the 'have you seen this man?' notes on billboards.

It still sends chills through my body and it still seems surreal. I watched a movie the other night on DHD about flight 93, something that I didn't want to watch but couldn't tear myself away.

It has been said that 9-11 is our generations Pearl Harbor or JFK assassination. That is to say that we will always remember where we were when it happened. It's amazing to to hear your personal story involving your dad. Thank God he was OK. Thanks for sharing. Let's all hope and pray for Peace so that no other generation will need to have a "always remember moment"
